Former Telco IP Director John J. Murphy Joins Han Santos Seattle Office
Continuing in the trajectory of steady growth, Han Santos finalized an agreement this month with the former Director of Legal Affairs and Intellectual Property at T-Mobile USA, Inc., John J. Murphy.
Murphy, a longtime strategic partner to Han Santos, brings with him more than 20 years of experience from both established IP Law Firms and corporate Legal Affairs for Fortune 50 companies.
While at T-Mobile, Murphy’s Patent Team portfolio was consistently ranked in the top 20 strongest portfolios by industry publications, a credit considering he built most of the portfolio from the ground up. Murphy notably performed IP Due Diligence for many of T-Mobile's key tech acquisitions.
Murphy joins the firm as Of Counsel and will be based out of the Seattle Office, with the core of his practice focusing on Business Strategies, Portfolio Counseling and IP Licensing Transactions in partnership with the firm’s IP Transactions Practice Lead and University of Washington Law Professor, Curtis Hom, who joined the firm in the summer of 2020.
John is a soft IP expert, having been a former director at Warner Brothers (Legal Expertise). and was one of the first attorneys to work with the Electronic Freedom Foundation and is a strong resource for open-source issues.
John built up the T-Mobile portfolio from scratch, he can build up a world class patent portfolio from scratch for any client as well (Relevance to startups or to companies looking to formalize their IP).
In addition to his practice, Murphy will directly support emerging practice growth projects under the direction of Managing Partner Pat Santos.

Murphy’s projects will range from running funding events for startup clients, creating various blockchain structures for copyright, and supporting industry events and Firm-Hosted Continuing Legal Education (CLE) events.
