Richard Dodson

Patent Agent

Richard Dodson has over 15 years of experience providing legal services in the field of intellectual property for Am Law 50 firms and Fortune 500 clients. He joined Han Santos as a patent analyst and agent in the Spring of 2020.

Richard’s background includes organizing technology areas into taxonomies, performing engineering outreach & invention harvesting, and virtual in-house counseling for large companies. A deep technologist, recent engagements include telecommunications core network subject matter and applications of Pi Calculus in formal methods.

Richard consults on patents in several technology areas including computer networking, cloud computing infrastructure, data mining, machine learning, and secure transaction processing. His past clients include Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Visa, and Adidas, as well as several universities around the world. He currently represents a large telecommunications company.

Prior to entering the patent practice, Richard spent 10 years as a software developer and systems architect within the wireless telecommunications industry. He capped that decade off by co-founding a wireless infrastructure services provider.

It was over this period that Richard discovered his passion for supporting start-ups while helping a small wireless carrier get off the ground. He also developed a billing and customer care system for smaller independent wireless carriers. Richard’s technical ability however is not only in telecommunications. He also notably designed a robotic automation system for an optical fiber coupler manufacturer.

Richard believes that protecting and enhancing an organization’s value must be the core of all legal services. To that end, he built a career specializing in clearly summarizing portfolio information to enable effective decision making. He is still an active member of the Seattle-area start-up community and enjoys helping start-ups build their foundational intellectual property portfolio.
