Elliott Chen

Partner | Patent Practice Lead

Elliott Chen is the partner in charge of Han Santos’ Patent Preparation and Prosecution Practice. He has extensive experience both in patent drafting and counseling Intellectual Property conflicts for several International software, telecommunications, and aerospace companies in the Northwest.

Elliott’s patent procurement experience and professional background is rich in both diversity and technicality, with a client portfolio spanning multiple technologies including mechanical devices, and chemical processes. He is also an expert in design patents and provided counsel for a telecommunications company’s response to the Apple vs. Google litigation.

Elliott specializes in patent conflict matters. This includes offensive and defensive patent portfolio reviews, opinion letters, and due diligence analysis. Elliott also counsels clients on IP licensing and acquisition matters.

Over the course of his career, Elliott successfully prepared and prosecuted over 450 U.S. and foreign patent applications for major Fortune 500 companies. Prior to joining the team, he spent seven years at a national Intellectual Property law firm.

Before transitioning his career to IP law, Elliott worked in academia for the University of Washington. He performed laboratory research and data analysis for the Department of Microbiology and the Department of Environmental Health for five years. His work resulted in several articles that are published in Toxicology Letters and the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health.
